The Office Chair in Open Spaces: The Essential Element of Well-Being!

25/11/2019

I had been suffering from back pain for 2 years and tried everything to find relief: doctors, physiotherapists, painkillers, acupuncturists… And the miracle happened when the osteopath explained to me that the pain was coming from my office chair and that it was unsuitable. After weeks of research and testing all kinds of seats, I’m going to reveal the MUST-HAVE of office chairs!

The office chair is one of those pieces of furniture you don’t choose lightly. We spend at least 7 hours a day, 5 days a week, which is 140 hours per month and just under 500 hours per year on our office chair, so it’s essential equipment to prioritize to optimize your productivity!

One of the biggest advantages of an office chair is being able to adjust it according to your body type. That’s right! This way, it adapts exactly to your needs. Moreover, the adjustments are really simple and easy to use, you just need to know they exist! By following these few recommendations, you will gain comfort, productivity, and above all well-being at work. Comfort is an important criterion for achieving quality work and increasing your concentration.

First of all, choose a seat with a base mounted on casters to give you great freedom of movement. The casters are different depending on whether the floor is hard (hardwood) or soft (carpet). The more precise you are in choosing your chair, the more you’ll congratulate yourself for investing in yourself!

Next, I recommend having a seat that is height-adjustable. To avoid damaging your upper back, your shoulders should be relaxed, and your elbows should form a 90° angle with your forearms. Adjust your chair to your body type, and it doesn’t matter if your feet touch the floor—the most important thing is the position of your shoulders and arms. For feet that don’t reach the floor, a footrest will do!

Then, position the lower part of your back against the backrest, and you can adjust the stiffness of the backrest or lock it in a certain position by applying pressure to it. You should feel that your back is supported at the level of your lumbar region (lower back).

Finally, regarding the workstation, the screen should be placed between 50 and 70 cm from your eyes. This is equivalent to placing the screen at your fingertips when you extend your arm in front of you. The keyboard can be raised with a keyboard stand and the mouse should be placed to the side of your keyboard (in alignment with it).

So in summary, choose seats with casters suited to your floor, height-adjustable and with lumbar support! If you take all these tips into account, you’ll be able to see the improvements this brings in just a few weeks 😉

You should never underestimate the effect that good working conditions can have on your state of mind. Good morale is essential to achieving your goals. A comfortable office chair adds to your well-being and therefore contributes to the success of your projects.

Recently, scientific studies on office posture have shown that the human body needs to move and live. It is therefore important to regularly alternate between a sitting position and a standing position, which is entirely possible thanks to height-adjustable desks. I just wrote an article on this subject, if you’re interested! In the meantime, take care of yourself, and happy shopping!
